BA Sustainable Luxury (Textiles)
About this course
Sustainable luxury in textiles sits at the intersection of creative design and critical reflection on how the fashion and luxury industries operate. Textiles are among the most culturally significant of human technologies, with a history stretching from the earliest fabric production to the complex global supply chains that produce the garments and furnishings of contemporary life. Luxury textiles in particular represent a convergence of craft, material quality, and cultural value, and the question of how luxury can be achieved sustainably, without environmental damage or labour exploitation, is one of the most pressing challenges the industry faces. At Southampton you will develop a thorough understanding of how textiles are designed, developed, and manufactured across global supply chains, with a strong focus on responsible sourcing, ethical craft practice, and the realities of how contemporary textile businesses operate. The programme engages with material and technical dimensions of textile design, with the cultural and historical contexts that give luxury its meaning, and with the sustainability frameworks that are reshaping what responsible production looks like. You will develop design skills alongside the critical and commercial understanding that the industry demands. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year with a work placement, giving you direct experience in a textile, fashion, or luxury goods business and the professional connections that a career in this sector depends on. Graduates go on to careers in fashion and textile design, luxury brand management, ethical sourcing, supply chain management, sustainability consultancy, retail buying, and fashion journalism. The combination of creative skill and sustainability understanding is increasingly valued by luxury brands that are under pressure to demonstrate environmental and social responsibility. Postgraduate study in sustainable fashion, design management, or textile studies is also an option.
