BA Theatre and Modern Languages
About this course
Theatre and modern languages is a degree that pairs the collaborative, embodied art of theatre with the linguistic and cultural depth of learning another European language. Theatre asks how texts, bodies, and spaces combine to create meaning in performance. It is a discipline concerned with the history of drama, theories of performance, and the practical craft of making theatre. A modern language adds the dimension of engaging with a different cultural tradition in its own terms, developing genuine proficiency and the cultural understanding that makes that proficiency meaningful. At the University of Bristol, this four-year full-time programme combines theatre with your chosen language from French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. The programme offers an enriching experience with intellectual challenges across both disciplines, and a range of core and optional units allow you to explore the areas that interest you most. A sandwich year is incorporated, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a professional setting before your final year. Work placement is also part of the degree, extending your practical experience. You will engage with dramatic texts and performance theory, study the theatre and performance traditions of the culture whose language you are learning, and develop the practical skills of theatre-making alongside advanced linguistic competence. The combination develops creative intelligence, analytical depth, and communicative versatility. The ability to collaborate, to think across cultural boundaries, and to engage with complex texts in more than one language are capabilities that employers in many contexts value. Graduates go on to work in theatre, arts administration, education, translation, journalism, international business, the cultural sector, and a wide range of other fields. Many pursue further professional training in theatre or education, or postgraduate study in theatre, modern languages, or cultural studies.
