BA Theatre and Performance with Enterprise
About this course
Theatre and performance with enterprise is a combination that addresses a real need in the cultural sector: the capacity to make work and to sustain a creative practice in a challenging economic environment. Theatre is a living, collaborative art form that requires not just the ability to perform, direct or write, but the professional skills to produce, organise, fundraise, manage and develop cultural enterprises. Combining performance training and critical study with a serious engagement with entrepreneurship and the economics of the creative industries gives graduates a distinctive and practically powerful set of competences. At the University of Leeds, this three-year full-time degree is taught by the School of Performance and Cultural Industries in collaboration with Leeds University Business School, which means you benefit from genuine expertise in both areas. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of theatre, performance and the cultural industries alongside entrepreneurship, business planning, marketing and the economics of creative organisations. The programme explores how cultural enterprises are built and sustained, how artists develop careers in a competitive and precarious sector, and how creative and commercial thinking can be combined effectively. A sandwich year placement, a year abroad, and a work placement are all available, giving you substantial professional and international experience that enriches your creative and entrepreneurial development. You will develop creative, critical and business skills that prepare you for a cultural sector career that requires versatility, resilience and the capacity to make things happen. Graduates move into arts production and management, theatre making and directing, cultural enterprise, arts funding and development, arts education, performance, community arts, festival and event management, and a wide range of roles in the creative industries. Postgraduate study in performance, arts management, or cultural enterprise is a well-supported pathway.
