About this course

Theoretical Physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing and applying mathematical frameworks to explain how nature works at the most fundamental level. Where experimental physics seeks to observe and measure, theoretical physics seeks to understand: to build the conceptual and mathematical structures that give experimental observations their meaning and that predict phenomena that have not yet been observed. The history of theoretical physics is the history of some of the most profound intellectual achievements in human thought, from Newton's mechanics and Maxwell's electromagnetism through Einstein's relativity and the quantum revolution to the ongoing search for a unified theory of all forces. At the University of St Andrews, this five-year full-time Integrated Masters programme includes a year abroad and sets the highest academic standards, reflected in a typical entry tariff of 232 points. You will explore the fundamentals of theoretical physics from classical dynamics through to the intriguing theories of quantum mechanics and relativity, and learn how these foundational ideas are applied in fields such as quantum optics, condensed matter, quantum field theory and the broader applications of quantum physics. The integrated masters format takes you to a level of theoretical depth and mathematical sophistication that prepares you directly for research and doctoral study, as well as for the most demanding professional roles in physics and related fields. Theoretical Physics graduates go on to careers in academic and governmental research, the technology and computing industries, financial services quantitative analysis, space and defence, data science and science communication. The extreme quantitative and analytical rigour of the degree is valued by employers across a wide range of sectors, and many graduates pursue doctoral research in physics, astrophysics, condensed matter, quantum computing or related fields. Others move into careers in technology, finance or data science, where their mathematical training provides exceptional analytical capability.
