BSc Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology
About this course
Therapeutic radiography and oncology is the clinical healthcare profession concerned with the planning and delivery of radiotherapy to cancer patients. Therapeutic radiographers work within oncology teams to administer precise doses of radiation to tumours, using highly sophisticated imaging and treatment planning systems, while managing the physical and psychological needs of patients going through a demanding treatment experience. It is a profession that combines technical and scientific expertise with genuine patient-facing care, and it plays a central role in cancer treatment, one of the most significant areas of modern healthcare. At Liverpool, this three-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on radiotherapy practice in a different healthcare system. The programme leads to eligibility to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a therapeutic radiographer. You will study radiation physics, radiobiology, oncology and the biology of cancer, treatment planning systems, imaging for radiotherapy, patient care and communication, and the professional and ethical dimensions of practice. Clinical placements, including in Liverpool's own oncology facilities and partner NHS trusts, are central to the programme from an early stage, giving you progressive supervised experience in real clinical environments. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Registered therapeutic radiographers work in NHS oncology departments, cancer centres, private radiotherapy facilities and increasingly in research settings where new treatment modalities are being developed. The profession offers clear progression pathways into advanced practice, treatment planning specialisation, research and education. As cancer treatment continues to evolve with new technologies including proton beam therapy and adaptive radiotherapy, the role of the therapeutic radiographer is expanding, and graduates from programmes such as Liverpool's enter a profession with genuine clinical importance and strong career development opportunities.
