BVMS Veterinary Medicine and Surgery
About this course
Veterinary medicine and surgery is one of the most demanding and rewarding degree programmes in higher education. It trains students to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease in animals across a huge range of species, from companion animals and farm livestock to wildlife and zoo animals. The profession requires deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, and clinical medicine, combined with the manual skill and compassionate judgement to apply that knowledge to patients who cannot describe their symptoms. This five-year full-time programme at Harper and Keele Veterinary School is delivered across two campuses: Harper Adams University's agricultural campus in Shropshire and Keele University's medical science facilities in Staffordshire. The partnership brings together Harper's strong tradition in agricultural and veterinary sciences with Keele's clinical and biomedical research strengths, creating a programme with particular depth in farm animal and large animal medicine alongside the small animal and equine clinical training that all veterinary schools provide. Clinical placements begin early in the programme and extend throughout your training, giving you substantial experience with real patients in a variety of practice settings before you graduate. Graduates from veterinary medicine and surgery programmes are eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and work as veterinary surgeons in clinical practice. Career paths include small animal practice, farm animal and equine practice, mixed practice, and specialist referral work in areas such as surgery, oncology, orthopaedics, and internal medicine. Veterinarians also work in research, public health, the food industry, government agencies, the military, and the pharmaceutical sector. The degree is one of the most demanding in the higher education system, but it opens a profession that is consistently rewarding and provides real options for specialisation and career development throughout a long working life.
