About this course

Veterinary physiotherapy is the application of physiotherapy principles to the assessment and treatment of animals, primarily horses and dogs, supporting their rehabilitation from injury, surgery, and neurological conditions and helping to maintain and improve their movement and wellbeing. It is a discipline that requires both the scientific knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and pathophysiology and the practical clinical skills to assess an animal's condition, design an appropriate rehabilitation programme, and deliver treatment safely and effectively. The field has developed rapidly as a recognised clinical specialism, with veterinary physiotherapists now working alongside veterinary surgeons across equine and companion animal practice. At Anglia Ruskin University this part-time programme uses specialist equine and canine therapy centres, giving you hands-on experience with real animal patients throughout your studies. You will build expertise from foundational anatomical and physiological knowledge through to advanced clinical techniques, developing the assessment, treatment planning, and rehabilitation skills needed to practise as a veterinary physiotherapist. The part-time structure allows you to develop your expertise while managing other commitments, and the specialist facilities provide a level of clinical immersion that is directly relevant to professional practice. Graduates from veterinary physiotherapy programmes work in equine practice alongside veterinary teams at racing yards, rehabilitation centres, and private practices, as well as in companion animal physiotherapy, working with dogs recovering from orthopaedic and neurological conditions. The profession has its own regulatory framework, and graduates typically work towards accreditation with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Veterinary Practice or equivalent. The discipline is also relevant to working in animal sports medicine, wildlife rehabilitation, and zoo animal care. Further study at postgraduate level in veterinary physiotherapy, animal rehabilitation, or clinical science is available for those wishing to develop advanced specialism.
