FDS Visual Impairment Rehabilitation
About this course
Visual impairment rehabilitation is a specialist healthcare discipline concerned with supporting people who are living with sight loss to maintain and develop their independence, safety and quality of life. Rehabilitation workers assess the impact of visual impairment on daily living, mobility and communication, and then work with individuals to develop practical strategies and skills that enable them to live as independently as possible. The field requires knowledge of eye conditions and their consequences, an understanding of assistive technology and low vision aids, and strong interpersonal skills for working sensitively with people at different stages of adjustment to sight loss. At the University of Bedfordshire, this two-year full-time programme is designed to provide focused, efficient preparation for professional practice in visual impairment rehabilitation. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the eye, common eye conditions and their functional consequences, independent living skills training, orientation and mobility, communication adaptations including braille and technology aids, and the legal and social frameworks relating to disability and visual impairment. The programme is practically oriented, with placement experience central to your development as a practitioner. Graduates work as rehabilitation workers for visual impairment in local authority sight loss services, the NHS, charities such as the Royal National Institute of Blind People, and independent providers. They support adults across the lifespan, from young people who have recently experienced sight loss to older adults dealing with age-related conditions. The profession offers genuine vocational reward, and there are clear career development pathways for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into management, training or research roles within the visual impairment sector.
