BSc Wildlife Conservation with Foundation Year
About this course
Wildlife conservation is a discipline that addresses one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: the accelerating loss of biodiversity driven by habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species, pollution, and overexploitation. Understanding how to sustain wildlife habitats and protect species requires both a strong grounding in biology and ecology and a clear-eyed engagement with the human forces that drive environmental change. Conservation is simultaneously a science, a policy field, and a practical profession, and effective practitioners need all three dimensions. At the University of Salford, this four-year full-time programme opens with a foundation year that provides a strong foundation in biology and environmental science before you progress to the BSc Wildlife Conservation degree. The foundation year is genuinely preparatory, ensuring that you have the biological and scientific knowledge needed to succeed in the main degree. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you direct professional experience in a conservation or environmental organisation before your final year. Work placement is also available. You will study ecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology, environmental policy, research methods, and the impact of human activity on natural systems, developing both the scientific knowledge and the analytical skills that conservation careers demand. You will gain practical field skills alongside laboratory and data analysis capabilities, learning to work with real wildlife populations and habitats in a variety of contexts. Graduates go on to work in conservation organisations, wildlife trusts, national parks, environmental consultancy, government agencies, research, and international conservation NGOs. Many pursue postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental management to develop specialist expertise. The scientific grounding and practical experience the programme provides are both highly valued in a competitive sector.
