BA Working with Children, Young People and Families
About this course
Working with children, young people, and families is a field that sits at the heart of some of the most significant challenges in contemporary society. Supporting the wellbeing, development, and life chances of children and young people requires practitioners who understand the complex interplay of individual, family, community, and societal factors that shape their experiences. The discipline draws on child development, psychology, sociology, social policy, and law to develop the analytical and practical understanding needed to work effectively with children and families in diverse and often difficult circumstances. At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time degree begins with a clear focus on local contexts, developing your understanding of the specific challenges facing children, young people, and families in the communities around you. As you progress, you will develop the skills to address national and global issues, engaging with the interconnectedness of contemporary society and the ways in which local experiences are shaped by wider policy, economic, and cultural forces. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, providing international perspective on how different societies support children and families, and how practice varies across welfare systems and cultural contexts. Graduates from this kind of programme go on to careers in a wide range of services and organisations that work with children, young people, and families. Social work, youth work, family support, early years education, school counselling, community development, play work, and voluntary sector roles are all common destinations. Many graduates go on to further professional training in social work, teaching, or youth work. The analytical and interpersonal skills the degree develops are also valued in policy, research, and management roles within children's services. The typical entry tariff is 104 points.
