About this course

Zoology is the scientific study of animals in all their extraordinary diversity, from the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive their biology to the ecological relationships that connect them to their environments. It is a discipline that spans an enormous range of scales and questions, asking how animals are built and how they function, how they evolved and how they behave, and how animal communities respond to environmental change. The skills a zoologist develops, combining rigorous observation, experimental thinking, data analysis and ecological understanding, are increasingly relevant in a world facing rapid biodiversity loss and ecosystem disruption. At the University of Salford you will study part-time, giving you the flexibility to balance your studies with other commitments while still engaging with a curriculum that covers biological processes, animal behaviour and the relationships between organisms and their environments. You will develop practical skills in field and laboratory work alongside the conceptual and quantitative tools needed to understand contemporary zoological science. The breadth of zoology means you will encounter topics from evolutionary biology, physiology, genetics and ecology, building a wide scientific foundation. Zoology graduates work in conservation organisations, wildlife management, environmental consultancies, zoos, aquaria and natural history broadcasting. Research careers in academic and applied settings draw on the scientific training the degree provides. Environmental monitoring, ecological impact assessment and biodiversity surveying are common professional roles. Many graduates also move into science communication, education, public engagement or policy work connected to wildlife and environment. Postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, animal behaviour, parasitology or related fields is a natural route for those who want to specialise further, and the breadth of the undergraduate degree gives you a good foundation for choosing a direction.
