About this course

Zoology is the scientific study of the animal kingdom in all its diversity, examining the behaviour, physiology, ecology, evolution, and conservation of animals from the simplest invertebrates to the most complex vertebrates. It is a discipline that operates across multiple scales, from the molecular and cellular through to the organismal and ecological, and it requires both laboratory expertise and field skills, since much of the most important knowledge about animals can only be generated through direct observation and study in the natural world. At Salford, this part-time programme includes a foundation year that builds a strong foundation in biology and the environmental sciences before you progress to the main BSc (Hons) Zoology degree. The foundation year is designed for students who want to develop their scientific knowledge and study skills before tackling the full demands of a degree-level programme, and it makes the route into zoology accessible to people who are returning to education or who come from non-traditional backgrounds. Through the foundation year and the main degree you will develop an understanding of animal biology across the major taxonomic groups, examining how animals function, how they evolved, how they behave, and how they interact with each other and with their environment. The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, providing professional recognition for your qualification. Zoology graduates move into careers in conservation, wildlife management, environmental consultancy, zoo and aquarium management, ecology, and biological research. Government environmental agencies, national parks, conservation charities, and international wildlife organisations all recruit zoology graduates. The quantitative and laboratory skills developed in the degree also open routes into biomedical research, environmental assessment, and science communication. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, or a related field, which is often required for specialist research positions and for leadership roles in conservation organisations.
