Astrophysics is the branch of physics that applies the laws of physics and chemistry to the study of astronomical objects, asking how stars are born and die, how galaxies form and evolve, what the large-scale structure of the universe looks like, and what the properties of dark matter and dark energy might be. It is a discipline that operates at the very frontier of what is known about the cosmos, combining observational data gathered from ground and space-based telescopes with the mathematical and computational tools needed to model physical processes of extraordinary scale and complexity.
