About this course

Comparative literature and German together form a combination that allows you to engage with literary traditions across cultural and national boundaries while also developing genuine linguistic fluency and cultural depth in one of Europe's great languages. Comparative literature is the study of literature across cultural and national frontiers, time periods, languages, and genres, even across the boundaries between literature and the other arts. It asks you to read widely and to develop the critical vocabulary to understand what is distinctive about particular literary traditions when set against others. German brings you into direct contact with one of the richest literary and philosophical traditions in the world, from Goethe and Schiller through Mann, Brecht, and Sebald to contemporary writing, alongside the linguistic competence to engage with that tradition in the original.
