About this course

English as a degree subject goes considerably further than a love of reading. It is a rigorous intellectual discipline that trains you to read with sustained attention, to construct and defend complex arguments, and to understand how literary works relate to the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which they were produced and received. Literature in all its forms, from poetry and drama to the novel, from the medieval period to the contemporary moment, provides the material through which you develop these habits of mind.
