History is the discipline through which we interrogate the human past, not just to recover what happened, but to understand why, and what it tells us about the societies that came before us and the one we inhabit now. It develops rigorous habits of evidence evaluation, interpretive argument, and close reading that are valuable across almost every professional context. At the same time, it is genuinely absorbing: the questions history poses, from the causes of revolutions to the experiences of ordinary people in extraordinary times, are among the most compelling in any field of study.
