About this course

Mental health nursing is the branch of nursing concerned with supporting people experiencing mental illness, psychological distress and the complex needs that arise from long-term mental health conditions. It is a profession that demands genuine empathy, strong therapeutic communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with people who may be frightened, in crisis or profoundly unwell. Mental health nurses practise in inpatient settings, community teams, crisis services, forensic units and specialist clinics, applying evidence-based interventions within a framework of recovery-oriented, person-centred care. At the University of Northampton this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Mental Health Nurse.
