Sociology is the scientific study of human social life, groups, and societies, asking how we are shaped by the social structures and institutions we inhabit and how, in turn, we reproduce and sometimes challenge them. It encompasses everything that falls within the social realm: family and kinship, class and inequality, ethnicity and identity, religion and secularisation, work and economy, politics and power, gender and sexuality. Sociologists apply a distinctive set of theoretical tools and research methods to these questions, moving between the concrete details of social life and the large-scale structures that give those details their meaning.
