Theoretical physics is physics pursued at its most mathematically rigorous and conceptually ambitious. Where experimental physics tests theories against measurement, theoretical physics constructs and explores the mathematical frameworks that describe the fundamental laws of nature, from quantum mechanics and quantum field theory to general relativity, string theory, and the statistical mechanics of complex systems.
