Civil engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical infrastructure that modern society depends on: roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, water treatment plants, flood defences, coastal structures, and the built environment of our towns and cities. It is one of the oldest engineering professions and one of the most varied, requiring both rigorous quantitative analysis and creative problem-solving in response to complex physical, environmental and social constraints.
