Studying two languages to a high level is one of the most demanding and rewarding things you can do as an undergraduate. German and Russian are linguistically rich and culturally distinct, each with its own literary tradition, philosophical heritage, and political history. German offers access to the thought of Goethe, Kafka, and Brecht, the intellectual legacy of Weimar and the Cold War, and the economic and political weight of modern Europe's largest nation. Russian opens the vast literary landscape of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov, the history of the Soviet period, and the distinctive grammar and script of one of the world's most widely spoken Slavic languages.
