Mathematics and statistics with operational research is a combination that brings together rigorous mathematical theory, the science of data and inference, and the discipline of optimising complex real-world systems. Mathematics provides the foundational structure: analysis, algebra, logic and proof. Statistics develops the tools for drawing reliable conclusions from data, managing uncertainty and making inferences about populations from samples. Operational research applies mathematical and statistical methods to decision-making in organisations, addressing problems of scheduling, routing, resource allocation, risk management and supply chain optimisation that arise in industry and commerce.
