About this course

Mechanical design engineering places the act of designing, at the centre of mechanical engineering practice. Where conventional mechanical engineering trains you in the analytical principles governing machines and structures, design engineering goes further in asking how those principles are brought to bear in creating new products and systems, how form, function and manufacture interact, and how engineering decisions are made under real conditions of uncertainty, constraint and collaboration. The interplay between design and manufacturing is fundamental to the field, and the ability to move fluently between conceptual ideas and practical realisation distinguishes the best engineers. At Glasgow this four-year full-time programme is grounded in mainstream mechanical engineering, covering mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, materials science and engineering mathematics, while placi
