About this course

Microbiology is the science of life at its smallest and most pervasive scales. Bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi, and protists are found in every habitat on Earth, from deep ocean sediments to the human gut, and their activities shape everything from climate and soil fertility to human health and the production of food, medicines, and industrial chemicals. Studying microbiology means developing a rigorous understanding of how these organisms live, reproduce, evolve, cause disease, and are harnessed for human purposes, drawing on cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, ecology, and immunology. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year programme includes a placement year in which you spend time working in an industrial, clinical, or research environment. The placement gives you the chance to apply your scientific knowledge in a professional setting, to understand how microbiology is
