Optometry is the healthcare profession focused on the examination of the eyes and the diagnosis and management of visual and ocular health problems. Optometrists are the primary point of contact for most people with vision concerns, and their scope of practice has expanded significantly in recent decades to include not only prescribing glasses and contact lenses but also diagnosing and managing a wide range of eye conditions, from everyday refractive errors to more serious conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and inflammatory eye disease. Independent prescribing, which allows suitably qualified optometrists to prescribe a full range of medicines, extends that scope still further and is increasingly central to the profession's role in reducing pressure on hospital eye services.
