Sociology is the study of how human societies are organised, how they change and how social structures shape individual lives. It asks why inequalities persist across generations, how institutions reproduce or challenge power, what holds communities together and what drives them apart, and how categories such as class, race, gender and age become meaningful through social practice. The discipline is both analytical and deeply engaged with the world as it is, offering frameworks for understanding everything from intimate relationships to global economic systems.
