About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe through mathematical reasoning and conceptual analysis rather than primarily through experiment. It asks the deepest questions available to science: what is the nature of space and time, what are the elementary constituents of matter, how did the universe begin, and what are the limits of our knowledge? Since Einstein's theory of relativity and the development of quantum mechanics in the early twentieth century, theoretical physics has repeatedly overturned intuitive assumptions and revealed a universe stranger and more ordered than common experience suggests. At Royal Holloway, this four-year MSci in Theoretical Physics builds progressively from the core material that all physics graduates are expected to know towards the more advanced and mathematically demanding content t
