Computer systems engineering is the discipline concerned with how computers and digital electronic systems are designed, built and made to work together effectively. It sits at the boundary between computer science and electronic engineering, addressing not just software and algorithms but the hardware architecture, electronic components, embedded systems and digital circuits that physical computing systems depend on. As computing has become embedded in everything from consumer electronics and medical devices to industrial control systems and vehicles, the demand for engineers who understand systems at this level has grown considerably. At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme builds a strong foundation in core computer science theory alongside a thorough understanding of the architecture and components of digital computers, electronic systems and embedded systems
