About this course

Economics is the study of choice: how individuals, households, firms, and governments make decisions under conditions of scarcity, and what the consequences of those decisions are for markets, institutions, and societies. It combines theoretical model-building with empirical analysis, using mathematical and statistical tools to test intuitions about human behaviour and to evaluate the effects of policies. At its best, economics provides a rigorous and scientifically grounded framework for thinking about some of the most important questions in public and commercial life.
