Economics is the study of how individuals, organisations, and societies make decisions under conditions of scarcity and uncertainty. It provides analytical tools for understanding everything from the choices a household makes about spending and saving to the behaviour of global financial markets, the effects of government policy, and the long-run forces driving growth and inequality. The discipline combines the rigour of formal modelling and mathematical analysis with the ambition of addressing some of the most important questions facing contemporary societies.
