Finance and statistics is a combination of two disciplines that have become increasingly intertwined in modern financial practice. Finance, as the current description notes, is the study of the theory and practice of financial decision-making: how capital is raised and allocated, how risk is valued and managed, how investments are appraised, and how financial institutions and markets function. Statistics is concerned with drawing objective conclusions from data where outcomes are subject to uncertainty or variability, a description that captures exactly why it is so important to finance, where almost every decision involves forecasting under uncertainty and evaluating evidence from noisy data.
