About this course

French and philosophy is a combination that brings together two disciplines deeply rooted in the French-speaking world, and the connection is not merely geographical. Some of the most significant philosophy of the twentieth century was written in French, from existentialism and phenomenology to structuralism and poststructuralism, and understanding these traditions in the original language transforms what is accessible and how deeply you can engage with it. At the same time, philosophy and language study share an attention to precision, to the weight of words, and to the importance of reading carefully, making the two subjects natural intellectual companions.
