About this course
Global philosophies and worldviews takes seriously the idea that philosophical thought is not the exclusive property of any one culture or tradition. Western philosophy, from Plato and Aristotle through Descartes and Kant to contemporary analytic and continental thought, has shaped much of modern academic inquiry, but it represents only one strand of humanity's sustained reflection on questions of truth, ethics, knowledge, and what it means to live well. This degree broadens that conversation substantially, engaging with African philosophy, Confucian ethics, Hindu metaphysics, Islamic political thought, Jewish existentialism, and Buddhist epistemology, among others. Sociology, paired with these philosophical traditions, provides the empirical and theoretical tools to understand how societies are structured, how they change, and how ideas circulate within them.
