About this course

Philosophy is the discipline that examines the most fundamental questions: what exists, what we can know, how we should live, and what makes reasoning valid. It is less a body of established truths than a set of methods for thinking carefully about things that other disciplines take for granted. The questions philosophy addresses, including whether there is an external world independent of our perception, whether free will is compatible with determinism, what justice requires, and how we should understand the nature of mind and consciousness, have proved durable because they resist easy answers and because getting clearer about them matters for how we live.
