About this course

Celtic and Scottish history is a programme that brings together two intertwined but distinct historical traditions, both of which are fundamental to understanding the cultural and political landscape of Britain and Ireland. Scottish history traces the development of Scotland as a nation, from its early medieval kingdoms and the emergence of a distinct Scottish identity through the Union with England and the transformative experiences of industrialisation, empire, and the twentieth century. Celtic studies engages with the wider world of Celtic languages and cultures, spanning Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man, examining how these cultures have preserved, adapted, and sometimes lost their linguistic and cultural distinctiveness across centuries of contact with more powerful neighbours.
