Economics and Africa and Black Diaspora studies is a combination that addresses a gap at the heart of mainstream economic education: the tendency to treat the economies and economic histories of Africa and the Black diaspora as peripheral rather than central to how the modern world economy was formed and continues to operate. Africa is home to more than a billion people and to some of the world's fastest-growing economies, and the economic histories of Africa and the Black diaspora, encompassing the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and the continuing dynamics of global inequality, are essential context for understanding contemporary economic structures and development challenges.
