It is a discipline that combines rigorous mathematical and statistical analysis with the kind of broader social and political thinking that connects abstract models to real-world policy. Understanding economics means understanding how markets work, why they sometimes fail, how government intervention can help or hinder, and how global trade and finance link economies around the world.
