About this apprenticeship

What it involves

This Level 4 apprenticeship trains propulsion technicians who maintain, diagnose, and repair marine or aerospace propulsion systems including diesel engines, gas turbines, and associated drive-train components. You will develop advanced technical skills in engine systems engineering, working in commercial, naval, or aerospace maintenance environments. It can lead to senior propulsion engineer, systems specialist, or technical leadership roles.

Propulsion system theory including diesel engines, gas turbines, and gearboxes
Advanced diagnostics and fault-finding on complex propulsion systems
Maintenance planning and the use of computerised maintenance management systems
Engineering calculations and technical analysis for propulsion performance
Health and safety in propulsion maintenance including confined spaces
Technical documentation, engineering drawings, and maintenance records
Environmental regulations relating to propulsion systems and emissions
On the job

What you’ll do day to day

Carry out scheduled maintenance on marine or aerospace propulsion systems
Diagnose complex faults using diagnostic equipment and technical data
Overhaul and repair engine components including fuel systems and turbochargers
Test and commission propulsion systems after maintenance or repair
Use computerised maintenance systems to plan and record work
Complete technical documentation and sign off work within company quality systems
Liaise with engineering teams, operators, and OEM representatives on technical issues
The deal

How this apprenticeship works

You earn a wage from day one. You are a paid employee, not a student. There are no tuition fees - the training is funded by your employer and the government.
About 20% is “off-the-job” training. Roughly a day a week is spent learning away from your normal duties - at a college, training provider, or online - working towards a recognised qualification.
It ends with an end-point assessment (EPA). Near the end, an independent assessor checks you can do the job to the national standard - through tests, a project, a portfolio or an interview. Pass it and you are fully qualified.

What you need to start

Level 4 (Higher) - roughly Foundation-degree level. Usually needs Level 3 (A-levels, a T-Level, or an Advanced apprenticeship) or relevant experience.
What’s next: Can lead to a Level 5/6 apprenticeship or a more senior role.
