About this apprenticeship

What it involves

The Commercial Laundry Operative apprenticeship prepares you to work in industrial laundry facilities that process linen, workwear, and textiles for hospitals, hotels, and businesses at high volume. You will operate commercial washing, drying, and finishing machines and learn to sort, inspect, and quality-check items throughout the laundry process. This role offers a steady entry point into the textile services industry with scope to progress into supervisory positions.

Safe operation of industrial washing, drying, ironing, and folding machines
Hygiene and infection-control requirements, particularly for healthcare linen
Quality inspection - spotting damage, staining, and finishing defects
Workplace health and safety including manual handling and chemical safety
Team communication and working to production schedules
On the job

What you’ll do day to day

Sort incoming items by fabric type, colour, and soil level
Load and programme commercial washing and drying machines
Operate flatwork ironers, tunnel finishers, and folding equipment
Inspect finished items and set aside those needing re-processing or repair
Pack and label clean items ready for despatch to customers
Handle and store chemicals safely following COSHH procedures

How this apprenticeship works

You earn a wage from day one. You are a paid employee, not a student. There are no tuition fees - the training is funded by your employer and the government.
About 20% is “off-the-job” training. Roughly a day a week is spent learning away from your normal duties - at a college, training provider, or online - working towards a recognised qualification.
It ends with an end-point assessment (EPA). Near the end, an independent assessor checks you can do the job to the national standard - through tests, a project, a portfolio or an interview. Pass it and you are fully qualified.

What you need to start

Level 2 (Intermediate) - roughly GCSE level. Often open with few or no formal qualifications - a strong first step. Some employers ask for a couple of GCSEs.
What’s next: Typically leads on to a Level 3 (Advanced) apprenticeship.
