The role
What a publishing managers and directors actually does, day to day.
As a Publishing Manager or Director, you shape what gets published and guide those books all the way from an author's idea to a finished copy in a shop or online. You decide which manuscripts to accept, work with editors and designers to make them the best they can be, and plan how to get them noticed and sold.
Your day involves reading manuscripts, meeting with authors and agents, planning budgets and timelines, and looking at what readers want right now. You need to understand both the creative side - what makes a great story - and the business side - how to make sure the book sells and the company makes money. It is varied work that combines storytelling with leadership and business skills.
