The role
What a rapper actually does, day to day.
The work is writing lyrics, recording tracks, performing live, building a following online and handling the business of releases, gigs and promotion. Talent with words and rhythm is only the start - persistence, self-promotion, networking and the resilience to handle knockbacks matter just as much in a crowded, competitive scene.
This is almost always self-employed and very uncertain - most rappers earn little for a long time and combine it with other work, with income coming unevenly from streams, shows, merchandise and collaborations. It demands huge dedication, thick skin and a willingness to keep going without guarantees.
There are no qualifications - rappers build skill through practice, writing constantly and performing wherever they can. Success comes from a distinctive style, hard graft, a strong online presence and building a genuine audience over years, and you handle your own money and tax as self-employed.
