The role
What a skip hire worker actually does, day to day.
The work is loading, delivering and collecting skips, often driving a lorry with a hydraulic lift, plus sorting waste at the yard for recycling or disposal. Reliability, physical fitness and care around heavy lifting gear and traffic matter, along with being helpful to customers and following the rules on what waste can go where.
The work is heavy, outdoors in all weathers and can be dirty and smelly, often with early starts, and pay usually starts around the minimum wage and rises with the right driving licence. There is steady demand, and holding an HGV licence opens up the better-paid driving side.
No qualifications are needed for yard work and you learn on the job, but delivering skips by lorry needs the right category of HGV licence and a Driver CPC. Waste handling follows strict legal rules, so you learn the regulations as you go.
