Transportation Engineer

AI

Transportation engineers design and build the roads, railways and bus systems that keep people moving around cities and towns. Their work makes sure journeys are safe, quick and good for the environment.

The role

What a transportation engineer actually does, day to day.

As a transportation engineer, you design and maintain the systems that move people around - roads, railways, bridges and bus networks. You work to make these systems safer, faster and better for the planet. Every road you help design or improve makes life easier for the people who use it.

Your work mixes office time with site visits. You'll use computer software to design new roads and transport systems, then go out to check the actual terrain and talk to communities about what they need. You might run tests to see if a new design will work, prepare detailed plans for builders to follow, or meet with councils and local groups to get their input on a new project. The job needs both creative problem-solving and careful attention to detail.
