Veterinary Surgeon

AI

Veterinary surgeons are doctors for animals. They diagnose and treat sick and injured pets, farm animals and other creatures. The job combines medical knowledge with caring about animals' wellbeing.

The role

What a veterinary surgeon actually does, day to day.

As a veterinary surgeon, you care for animals when they are ill or hurt. You examine them, work out what is wrong, and decide on the best treatment. Some days you do surgery, other days you give vaccinations or deal with emergencies. You talk with owners about what their pet needs and help them understand what is happening.

The job is varied and can be emotional - you will help animals get better, but sometimes you will also help animals that are dying or suffering to die peacefully and without pain. You work with a team of nurses and support staff, and you keep detailed records of every animal you treat. If you love animals and want to help them, and you can handle the harder moments, this job is very rewarding.
