The role

As a chemical engineer, you work out how to make products on a huge scale. Mixing two chemicals in a test tube is easy; doing the same thing safely in a factory that makes thousands of tonnes is hard - and that is the puzzle you solve. You use chemistry, physics and maths to design the equipment and steps that turn raw materials into things people need.

You might help make life-saving medicines, cleaner fuels, or safer food. A typical day mixes problem-solving on paper with checking how things work in the real world, always looking for ways to make the process cleaner, safer and less wasteful.

Daily responsibilities

  • Design and develop chemical processes for large-scale production.
