This job holds up well against AI
AI is used for very little of what this job actually involves today, and the work is hands-on, in the real world. Software alone can't do it. That is about as safe as careers get right now, though it is still worth learning to use the tools well.

The role

As a model, you work with photographers, fashion designers and advertising companies to show off clothes, jewellery, makeup and other products. You go to castings (auditions) where you show what you can do and what look you have. If you win the job, you show up for shoots - that might be in a studio, outdoors, or at a fashion show.

A typical week might mix different types of work: a clothing catalogue shoot one day, a magazine cover the next, then a catwalk show in the evening. You need to be reliable, take direction well, and handle rejection - not getting a job is normal in this industry, not a sign you're not good enough. The work pays well if you build your portfolio and get an agent. You stay fit and look after your appearance, but the job isn't just about looks - it's about being professional and easy to work with.

Daily responsibilities

  • Participate in photo shoots for fashion campaigns, catalogues, and editorials.
  • Attend castings and auditions to secure modelling opportunities.
  • Collaborate with photographers, stylists, and makeup artists to create compelling visuals.
  • Maintain physical appearance and fitness through regular exercise and skincare routines.
  • Travel to various locations for shoots and fashion events, adapting to different environments.
  • Follow direction from creative teams to achieve the desired look and feel for projects.
  • Network with industry professionals to build relationships and secure future work.
  • Stay updated on fashion trends and industry developments to remain relevant.
