Art history combined with modern languages is a pairing that opens up the full depth of cultural experience across time and geography. Art history asks fundamental questions about how images and objects carry meaning, how artistic traditions develop and travel across borders, and what visual culture reveals about the societies that produce it. Modern languages gives you direct access to those cultures in their own terms, enabling you to engage with scholarship, archives, and artworks in the original language rather than through translation. At Essex this five-year degree allows you to study the history and theory of art alongside French, German, Italian, Spanish, or Portuguese, with the language taken at post-A Level or, for some options, from scratch.
