Switch on the news any day of the week and you are confronted with the challenges and contradictions of modern Europe, from debates about the nature and future of the European Union to questions of migration, democratic backsliding, energy security, and the resurgence of nationalist politics. Few people, however, truly understand the complex phenomenon that is modern Europe, with its interweaving of national histories, linguistic diversity, supranational institutions, and shared but contested values.
