Sociology is the systematic discipline that examines how societies work, why they are structured the way they are, and what forces produce inequality, change, and conflict between and within social groups. It treats the social world as something to be explained rather than taken for granted, applying conceptual frameworks and empirical methods to questions about class, race, gender, education, religion, the economy, media, and the state. Sociology is inherently critical, asking whose interests are served by particular arrangements and what evidence says about the gaps between ideals and realities.
