It draws on philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, and policy studies to ask fundamental questions: What is education for? How do children and adults learn? What makes teaching effective? How do schools and educational systems reflect and reproduce social inequalities? What should the curriculum contain, and who should decide? These questions matter profoundly, because the answers given, explicitly or implicitly, shape the lives of millions of young people and the character of society more broadly.
